Norwich vs Leicester Preview

This weekend, the blues travel to East Anglia on the back of Monday night’s massively underwhelming 4-1 loss at the London Stadium, where Leicester face a Norwich team who have had a difficult start to the season. With a 5-0 loss to current champions Manchester City and an impressive 6-0 win against Bournemouth mid-week, how will the Foxes fare against the Canaries, who now come into this game in high spirits!

After an abysmal performance last Monday against West Ham, Leicester look ahead to a fixture in which they struggled in Norwich’s relegation season in 2019/20. With a 1-1 draw at the King Power on the back of 8 straight consecutive league wins, as well as a 1-0 loss at Carrow Road, have Norwich become a bit of a bogey team for the foxes in recent times?

Despite the calibre of opponent that Norwich have played thus far, they have looked extremely unreliable defensively. The feeling around Carrow Road is that the canaries should DEFINITELY be in the market for a central defender before the window closes. With the quality that Rodgers’ line-up boasts on the attacking front, even without the suspended Ayoze Perez, Leicester will definitely be confident that they can exploit this during Saturday’s matchup. On the other hand, Leicester have had their own defensive disaster during the first two games of the seasons. With Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana and Jannik Vestergaard all out injured, Soyuncu and Amartey haven’t been all that impressive within the opening fixtures. With Timothy Castagne hopefully looking set for a return to the squad this weekend, can his quality help the foxes in looking organised defensively once again?

TEAM NEWS

There are no major injury worries for Norwich heading into this weekend with the previously unavailable Christoph Zimmerman returning to the team sheet against Bournemouth mid-week. New loanee Brandon Williams may be set to start this weekend too after his debut on Tuesday night with Sam Byram still out long-term.

Leicester head into the game at Carrow Road with a number of issues, where they will be without winger Ayoze Perez due to suspension. Jannik Vestergaard could be set for a return from a knee injury picked up in training, however he still remains a doubt. Jonny Evans remains out until at least mid-September, despite being called up to the Northern Ireland national team. Papy Mendy is expected back in training soon however, as we know, Justin and Fofana remain out injured for the long term.

HEAD-TO-HEAD STATISTICS AND FAN THOUGHTS

On our last visit to Carrow Road, we came away with a 1-0 loss due to a Jamal Lewis super strike in the 70th minute. However, with Leicester winning two trophies since this fixture was last played and becoming a much more established top 6 club, can the Foxes silence the Canaries this time round? Let’s take a look at some interesting statistics from our previous encounters:

  • In the last 5 encounters, there have been 3 Leicester wins compared to Norwich’s one, with the honours being shared just once.
  • Under 2.5 goals have been scored in the last three encounters between these two clubs. Norwich is yet to score in the Premier League this season, and despite scoring six goals against Bournemouth in the League Cup, we expect their strikers to struggle. Three of the Foxes’ previous six games have also resulted in under 2.5 goals, including 1-0 victories over Wolves and Man City, so we don’t expect many goals.
  • Norwich are looking to win two consecutive League games against Leicester for the first time since 2011.
  • Norwich have lost their last TWELVE Premier League games, with their last win coming against Leicester City.
  • The Canaries have failed to score in their last 6 premier league games, conceding 20 within this time.

Here are the thoughts of Leicester City fan Isaac Hutton:

“Going into the game against Norwich I feel like it’s a time where we always play best coming off a loss, especially after how we performed last season we always seem to strive into our next game after taking a loss. I feel like with Perez now suspended for three games it will give some other players a chance they deserve to come into the team and mark their place.

I feel confident in the team that we can go out and put in a solid performance and come back with a big 3 points that I feel the team needs to really boost their confidence going on into the season ahead of us.”

Personally, I can see this game being Norwich 1-3 Leicester. I think Leicester can cause too many problems on the attack for this Norwich defence. I think the link up play between Maddison and Barnes will prove too much to handle with either Kelechi, Daka or Vardy on the end of it. In addition, I don’t think Norwich have enough fire power to cause this Leicester side too many problems with the possibility of Vestergaard and Castagne returning to the XI. Come on you Foxes!
