Newcastle 0-0 Leicester Report by Alex Merson

Still life in' - Leicester City survival verdict given in national media reports on Newcastle draw - Leicestershire Live

Leicester will stay in the bottom 3 going into the final day of the Premier League season, after yet another lacklustre performance against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday night, in a 0-0 draw.

After back-to-back defeats for Dean Smiths’ side, going away to Newcastle was looking likely to be another defeat, however in a big defensive display, the Foxes were able to hold out for a point, despite being dominated for near enough the entire game.

The game was shaky from start to finish, with Newcastle controlling the game and keeping the ball away from Smith’s side for the majority of the match. It was only the last 5 minutes of the game when Leicester showed any real threat to Newcastle, as they looked like they played for a point the entire game.

Leicester would have to wait until the 91st minute for their first and only shot of the game, when Nick Pope denied Castagnes volley from inside the area in the dying moments of the game.

Newcastle only needed a point to secure Champions League football next season, and they deserved all 3, with 78% possession and a whopping 24 shots throughout the game. They will only have themselves to blame however, as just 4 of the shots were at goal, and Daniel Iversen made some big saves to keep the scores level.

The post was shattered 3 times from Newcastle, with the ball somehow staying out, but Leicester managed to hang on to a point.

The result sees Leicester needing to win their final game of the season at the King Power against European finalists West Ham, as well as hoping that Everton drop points in their game against Bournemouth at home in their bid for survival.

It is the first time that the relegation race is out of Leicester’s hands, and it would take a final day result to keep the Foxes’ in the Premier League, but as fans know anything can happen on the final day.
